Mitiga Airport resumes flights

Mitiga International Airport, Tripoli’s only functioning airport, announced on Thursday resumption of flights.

On early Thursday, the flights at the airport were suspended and some others were diverted after “deadly overnight rocket fire” had hit it, according to AFP.

Mustafa al-Mejii, spokesperson for the Government of National Accord forces, told AFP that the rocket fire killed a guard and injured several airport’s security agents.

“The attack was carried out by [the militias of (military strongman Khalifa] Haftar from their positions south of Tripoli,” he told AFP.

Hence, the passengers were stranded on early Thursday in front of the airport terminal as its main gate was closed and its staff were absent.

In early August, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) envoy Ghassan Salame condemned the repeated indiscriminate shelling targeting Mitiga airport.

In a statement published by UNSMIL, Salame explained that Mitiga airport is the only “indispensable functioning airport available for use by millions of civilians and for the delivery of humanitarian assistance in the greater Tripoli area.”

“These attacks have continued unabated since the start of the LNA offensive against Tripoli on 4 April despite United Nations’ calls for the protection of all civilian infrastructure and for precautions to protect the civilian population,” he said.
