Presidential Council fuels ‘Murzuq war’ to distract Libya’s National Army

The stalemate on fighting frontlines in southern Tripoli has raised questions about the true aims that the Government of National Accord (GNA) is attempting to achieve by expanding the war area after the deadly clashes in Murzuq in south of the country, thus trying to distract the Libyan National Army (LNA) from the major battle to enter Tripoli.

This had been reaffirmed after the member of Murzuq municipality Atiqa Bashir spoke to 218TV confirming that the attacking force was holding South Protection Force’s logo – and it was under the command of the Presidential Council – saying that there is an alliance between Chadian rebels and some parties of the GNA.

A Murzuq resident said that the aims of entering the town by the armed groups are out of mere retaliation of those people who are loyal to the LNA, which raises the question: Why hasn’t the Presidential Council disavowed the attacking force in Murzuq yet?

“Sending the war as far away as possible from Tripoli is the only goal cherished by the GNA. The fighting in Murzuq abd calm in Tripoli aims to distract the LNA’s concentration on the capital, especially after the massive airstrikes against locations seen by the Presidential Council as vital for its war against the LNA.” A security expert explained.

The Presidential Council has adopted a policy that aims at expanding the war geographic area to push it away from Tripoli so it ensures its position in the capital. This policy has become clear with the GNA failing to explain its relation to those groups in Murzuq; whether the whole GNA or some parties inside the Presidential Council.
