Libyan Islamist politicians: “Burnt cards” playing behind the scenes

Several personalities are working behind the scenes on funding and giving moral support for the fighters of the Government of National Accord (GNA) on all fighting frontlines whether in Tripoli or elsewhere since their known figures have become ‘burnt cards’ in the public eye.

The most prominent figure of all is Abdelhakim Belhaj who has been laying low for awhile as he got used to working behind the scenes while he uses his entourage to execute what his group asked him to do.

Belhaj is considered the right hand of Turkey and Qatar in Libya and despite the fact that he is wanted by an arrest warrant from the Libyan Public Prosecutor, all evidence gathered by the Libyan National Army (LNA) that proves Belhaj’s involvement in backing up GNA forces, in addition to accusations against him of bringing mercenaries to fight for the GNA.

The researcher in international terrorism at the London-based Middle East Forum Ahmed Atah said they had received information saying the former Emir of Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, Belhaj, was regrouping militias in Libya with instructions from organizations outside Libya – Islamist-oriented groups that aim to take over Libya’s oil.

Atah revealed that Turkey and Qatar were insisting on making a new Libya post-2011, so Belhaj was chosen by Turkish intelligence in 2015 to regroup and spread militias across Libya through support from Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn) forces – Muslim Brotherhood’s military wing.

The leaders of Islamist politics are playing a massive role in fueling war on all frontlines and cities in Libya aiming to control the government so the revenues can be under their control to use them for their personal and ideological benefits.
