US preparing for strikes against ISIS in Libya

Satellite surveillance images have shown US aircraft flying over Libya for over six hours on Sunday.

Observers believe that such a surveillance mission could mean that the US is preparing for a strike on ISIS sleeper cells in Libya.

US Africa Command spokesperson Air Force Colonel, Chris Karns, said earlier that military strike still remains an option in the event that terror groups regenerate and present additional threats, adding that the US won’t discuss the conditions that call for a strike against terrorists so that they could have no privilege ahead of it.

Karns said in an email to Military Times that the ongoing fighting and conflict in Libya has the potential to give existing terrorist elements in Libya oxygen, adding that this is a situation that is being carefully monitored, as intensified and inclusive dialogue is occurring to work toward a political solution.

He expalind that the chaos exhibited in Libya presents an opportunity for terror groups to recruit, conduct some basic training and survive, adding that evidence suggests these efforts are occurring.

US AFRICOM Commander General Stephen Townsend met in Tunisia, along with US Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland, the Head of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al Sarraj, on August 26 and discussed threats from existing violent extremist organizations in Libya, along with the need for a solution to end the civil war.
