Libya’s conflict on Security Council’s negotiations table

An emergency meeting will take place at the UN Security Council on Wednesday in an attempt by the international community to alleviate the conflict between Libyan parties, yet many observers say such meetings have become repetitive as they only come up with condemnations scattered on all sides without making abiding resolutions that can alter the war that has been ongoing since last April.

This time, Russia is the chair-country of the Security Council meeting on Libya. Russia is an active stakeholder of the Libyan status quo.

“Libya is a very difficult riddle. It could be also considered more difficult from the situation in Syria, yet no military solution can end the conflict in the country.” The Russian ambassador to the UN said.

The Head of UNSMIL Ghassan Salame will brief the Security Council on latest developments in Libya, knowing that he has vowed to send the case of the attacks on Mitiga Airport in Tripoli to the Security Council, its Sanctions Committee and the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

Libya is once again on international community’s negotiating table. Will the Security Council come up with changing resolutions that can affect the situation on the ground or will it just repeat the words of previous meetings? Hence, leaving Libya to the stubbornness of it’s own conflicting fellow citizens!
