UN envoy: Attacking Libyan airports disastrous and Security Council should condemn it

The UN envoy to Libya has briefed the United Nations Security Council on the situation in Libya, saying those who attacked the staffers of the UNSMIL in Benghazi must be brought to justice.

Salame added in his briefing on Wednesday that the ongoing conflict in Tripoli had impeded any political process that can bring good to all Libyans.

He indicated that attacking airports is a catastrophic act and that the UN Security Council should condemn any attacks that threaten civilian lives.

“Murzuq is seeing terrible conditions as there have been over 100 deaths and lots of injuries. Shops and houses have been burned or robbed and thus there is a possibility that violence in there can expand.” Salame said.

He added that what happened in Murzuq could happen in other areas in Libya and that the UNSMIL needs a humanitarian response plan in the whole country.

“The Libyan parties agreed to the truce of last August but violations took place and nowadays violence is prevailing and escalating as the warring parties are getting weapons’ supplies. The ban on arms is not effective enough in Libya.” Salame indicated.

He added that the arrival of mercenaries in Libya is very dangerous and could fuel the country’s conflict, saying the international community’s support should be doubled and that he hails the G7 calls for an international conference on Libya.
