Security Council unanimously agrees on commitment to arms embargo in Libya

Russia’s representative to the United Nations Security Council, Vasily Nebenzya, has stated that the Wednesday Security Council meeting saw a unanimous agreement on the need for warring parties in Libya to commit to the arms embargo in the country.

Nebenzya added that Russia’s position in Libya is unchanged; that is there should be a full commitment to arms embargo by all parties to conflict, including foreign actors.

He told reporters after the end of the Security Council meeting that there can be no military solution in Libya and that Libya is in dire need for resuming the UN-led political process.

In the meantime, Nebenzya indicated that Security Council member states had taken into account the words of UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame about the need to expand the mandate of UNSMIL in the country so it can perform better amid the complications in Libya.

“I’m not sure the proposals have been taken positively or that we will be able to solve the crisis in the near future, however; the message of Salame has been heard.” Nebenzya further added.
