Libya’s crisis at the top of international and European meetings’ agenda

The Libyan Crisis has returned to making headlines and topped agendas of international and European meetings in recent weeks starting from the Group of Seven to a Italian-French meeting between both countries’ presidents after a long political conflict between Italy and France, including disagreements on Libya.

Berlin hosted Wednesday a preliminary meeting for the upcoming international conference on Libya scheduled for next November. The meeting was attended by representatives from the UK, US, France, Italy, Russia, Egypt, UAE, European Union and Arab League.

The meeting in Rome between Emmanuel Macron and Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte saw agreement on New York initiative under the auspices of the UN, saying it could rally international community around solving the Libyan crisis. They both reiterated that they will work together to resolve the conflict in Libya.

According to Italian press, Qatar’s representatives arrived in Italy at the time of Macron and Conte’s meeting, while Germany’s president is expected to arrive in Rome to hold a trio meeting with the French and Italian counterparts.

Turkey was also present in the recent movements as the presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalın said his country took part in Berlin preliminary meeting to find a solution to the Libyan crisis, saying Ankara supports a ceasefire in the country.

With these efforts by the international community to find a solution to the Libyan crisis, Italy is still holding on the lead and France is hoping to unify the stance of the international community in New York meetings, which shows that both are not content with Germany taking the lead on the Libyan crisis.
