Turkey’s security agreement with Libya’s GNA sent to Parliament for endorsement

Turkey said Sunday it had sent the security and military MoU with Libya’s Government of National Accord to the Parliament for endorsement.

This is a new step by Turkey toward providing GNA with military support as it works on legalizing its security and military agreement that was signed with GNA last month.

The agreement included readiness for sending “Rapid Response Force” to Tripoli by Turkey, according to Erdogan’s statement, which also described the General Commander of Libyan National Army Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar as “illegitimate leader and a representative of an illegitimate body”.

The agreement was accompanied by a maritime boundaries MoU in what seems to be “military support for natural resources” as Turkey sent very hastily the maritime agreement to the Parliament and got the green light, while kept the security agreement for last Sunday.

Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Mavlut Çavuşoğlu told Reuters that the Parliament will start implementing the MoU after it gets ratified in what sounds as a defiance of international rejection to the MoUs, knowing that Egypt has also condemned the MoUs and said they are illegal and called on Turkey to stop intervening in Libya so the country can regain its stability.

Greece, which expelled Libya’s ambassador, has also called for halting the MoU between Turkey and GNA, a call seconded by the European Union member states and Cyprus.

The endorsement of Turkish Parliament comes, according to experts, as a minor validation of the military agreement with GNA since Erdogan has already endorsed it, which could be very destructive to the region’s stability and security.
