Italy interrogates captain of ship that transported arms to Libya

The Italian police has confiscated the mobile phones of the crew on board the ship that was transporting Turkish arms to Tripoli after it has docked in Genoa port.

Le Repubblica said the Italian police interrogated the captain of the ship, who asked for asylum after the ship was asked to remain in Genoa port since last Monday.

It added that the Italian authorities are working on figuring out the track of the ship via other geographical tools as the GPS system was shut down for long once it entered Libyan waters.

Italian news agency “Nova” has revealed that the Lebanese-flagged ship that was depicted on January 28 coming from Turkey with a Turkish frigate docked at Genoa port in Italy after sustaining a technical fault.

A young sailor on board of the Lebanese ship went to an Italian police station near the Genoa port and vowed to tell the truth about the shipment of the cargo ship, regarding the illegal arms trade between Turkey and Libya, Nova reported.

It added that investigations were still ongoing and the police and concerned authorities could consider the case as crimes of international smuggling of weapons. The ships is still at an Italian port awaiting the final verdict.
