Williams: Arms embargo in Libya is a farce and Berlin conference is viable

The German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and the Deputy Head of the UNSMIL Stephenie Williams held a joint press conference in Munich following a meeting for the Berlin follow-up commission on Libya.

The German Foreign Minister said the Munich meeting aims at consolidating the ceasefire agreement in Libya, adding that there will be a meeting for the commission in Brussels to discuss its work.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Head of UNSMIL for political affairs Stephenie Williams said foreign intervention in Libya isn’t acceptable and the ongoing arms embargo in Libya is ‘a farce’ as it continues to be violated.

Williams said the Berlin conference conclusions turned the situation in Libya from words to actions and that Cairo and Geneva meetings showed that the parties have a desire for reaching peace.

“Permanent ceasefire is a complicated issue and needs more time but the positive indications in Geneva talks.

She also explained that the Libyan people are suffering from oil blockade ramifications, calling on all parties to have responsibility to end the conflict and help the IDPs return to their houses.

The German Foreign Minister threatened that the countries violating the arms embargo in Libya will be named and that they are sending ships to the Mediterranean to monitor the arms embargo off the Libyan coast.
