UNSMIL calls for humanitarian ceasefire in Libya over Coronavirus threats

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), has called on the General Command of the Libyan National Army to have a positive response to calls for an end to the humanitarian fighting to allow local authorities to take action and to address the Coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement on Thursday, the UNSMIL expressed its satisfaction with the Government ofNational Accord, which welcomed the calls for the immediate implementation of a humanitarian truce that would enable the parties and local authorities to respond immediately to the threat of the spread of Coronavirus in Libya.

The UN mission called on both sides of the conflict to stop the fighting and to pay attention to protect the Libyan society from the catastrophic consequences that the Coronavirus pandemic may cause to everyone in the country.

It also expressed its hope that this humanitarian truce will lead to the agreement of the leaderships of both parties on the ceasefire proposal presented by the United Nations on February 23 as reached in Geneva within the framework of the Joint Military Commission 5 + 5.
