UNSMIL urges Libyan conflict parties to focus on “Coronavirus battle”

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) called Wednesday for an immediate end to the military escalation in Libya, reiterating the need for the halt of hostilities, end of the build-up of forces and the flow of arms and foreign fighters into the country.

“While the whole world is engaged in combating the spread of the Coronavirus epidemic that has exhausted a number of resource-rich countries, attacks and counterattacks in Libya continue to cause more suffering and civilian casualties!” The mission said in a statement, stressing that Libyans need to shift their focus to the battle against the Coronavirus.

The UNSMIL reminded all parties to the conflict in Libya of their obligations in accordance with international humanitarian law and international human rights law to ensure the protection of civilians.
