US warns of growing Russian role in Libya

Reuters cited the US military as saying that it believed that Russia was establishing a geostrategic presence in Libya that goes beyond the idea of supporting the Libyan National Army, led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar militarily.

The US military said that Moscow’s presence in Libya may be strengthened later by the deployment of defense systems, which constitutes a threat to NATO.

The United States also warned of a Russian attempt to establish a stronghold in Libya, calling on Moscow to stop its “destabilizing” actions in Libya.

According to the US military, the Libyan conflict has reached a dead end, hence; Washington affirmed its commitment to working with its partners “to deter activities that undermine Libya’s sovereignty.”

The US also praised Maltese government’s seizure of $1.1 billion of Libyan currency printed by the Russian company “Goznak” at the request of the Central Bank in Al-Bayda.

It is noteworthy that Libyan parties and political figures recently expressed their criticism of the US and Western policy in general, which adopts a policy of double standards in condemning the Russian role, while turning a blind eye to Turkey, which openly continues to send arms and warplanes as well as Syrian officers and mercenaries to Tripoli to take part in the fighting with GNA forces against the Libyan National Army.
