GNA rejects Egypt’s request for Arab League emergency meeting on Libya

The Libyan Foreign Minister of the Government of National Accord, Mohamed Taher Sayala, rejected Egypt’s request to hold an emergency meeting of the Arab League next week on Libya.

Sayala’s refusal came during a phone call with the Chairman of the Executive Council of Foreign Ministers at the League of Arab States for the current session, Yusuf bin Alawi, where they discussed current developments in Libya, along with the letter submitted by Libya rejecting the request of Egypt.

He stressed that the Libyan refusal stems from the failure to follow the procedures and rules of any meeting in order to achieve the desired goal, and on top of that is consulting with Libya as the country concerned with the meeting, which did not happen.

Sayala pointed out that the closed meeting via video is not suitable for discussing complicated files which need in-depth discussions.

On Friday, Egypt called for an emergency meeting of the Arab League at the level of foreign ministers in order to discuss developments in Libya.

Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, said that Egypt’s request met “the support in the internal system by several countries.”
