NGOs accuse EU of returning illegal immigrants to “detention camps” in Libya

Four humanitarian NGOs accused the European Union and Frontex Agency of using planes to monitor migrant boats in the Mediterranean in order to inform the Libyan Coast Guard of their location and return them to Libya. Frontex has denied the accusations.

The report, published by the NGOs, stated that the European border protection agency Frontex operates planes in the Mediterranean to monitor and follow up migrant boats and inform the Libyan coastguards about their location, so that they can be intercepted and transported to the Libyan shores, according to what was reported by InfoMigrants, which specializes in illegal immigration news.

The report says the incident is a violation of international law and human rights of migrants who have been returned to the camps, which are described as “detention camps” in Libya.

The report emphasized that this method has resulted in the sinking of migrant ships and casualties in a “collective form”, which reveals the European Agency’s complete evasion of its duty to rescue migrants at sea.
