Turkey: Egypt’s concerns about its borders with Libya are “legitimate”

The Turkish presidential spokesman, Ibrahim Kalın, confirmed Ankara’s understanding of Cairo’s “legitimate” security concerns about its borders with Libya, saying they see Cairo pursuing a “wrong policy” with its support for Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.

Kalın said they support a sustainable truce in Libya, noting that its conditions include the withdrawal of the Libyan National Army forces from Al-Jufra and Sirte, also on the condition that they return to the track of the Skhirat agreement signed in 2015.

The spokesman for the Turkish presidency told AFP that Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar was “unreliable from the start, and undermined all truce agreements and initiatives to reduce tension.”

He also criticized the recent French position on the crisis in Libya, saying that Paris supports Haftar and endangers the security of NATO, the Mediterranean and North Africa.

On their position regarding any future negotiations, Turkey said – on behalf of the Government of National Accord – that it rejects any negotiations that include Haftar, indicating that Ankara will remain in Libya as long as the GNA requires its assistance.
