US concerned over Russian mercenaries’ involvement in Libyan oilfields

On Friday, the US embassy in Libya reaffirmed Washington’s “full” support to the National Oil Corporation.

The US embassy said that there is an “unprecedented campaign supported by foreign powers to undermine the energy sector in Libya and prevent the resumption of oil production”.

The US embassy expressed its deep concern about the “shameful” intervention of Wagner Group fighters and other foreign mercenaries in oil facilities and their actions against employees of the National Oil Corporation at the Sharara oilfield, noting that this constitutes a direct assault on Libya’s sovereignty.

The US embassy regretted that the Libyan parties were unable to reach a solution that would lift the blockade on oil and gas, which it said was “unnecessary.”

The US embassy indicated that enabling the National Oil Corporation to restart operations is a prerequisite for consensus to achieve a fair distribution of the country’s wealth, and that the longer Libya’s oil depends on foreign interests, the longer it will take for Libya to recover economically, and contribute to obstructing public sector wages as well as improving infrastructure, hence; causing a deficiency in the costs of food and medicines.

The US embassy stressed that with the return of the responsible actors to the facilitated ceasefire talks of the United Nations, the cessation of foreign interference.

It called for allowing the NOC to immediately resume its operations as it is a crucial step to restore Libyan sovereignty and a decisive guarantee to prevent further manipulation from outside parties, putting an end to military action.
