UN organizes seminar to protect women’s participation in Libyan politics

The United Nations Women and the Canadian Embassy to Libya organized Friday an online seminar on the first anniversary of the enforced disappearance of HoR member Siham Sergiwa, to discuss protecting women’s political participation and ending violence against women in Libya.

The seminar was held in the presence of 110 participants, as the UN mission in Libya said the event was organized in honor of the pioneering women, such as Salwa Bugaighis, Farihah Al-Barakawi, Intisar Al-Hasaari and Nassib Kernafah.

Acting Special Representative Stephanie Williams, the UN Women Representative in Libya and the Canadian and Swedish Ambassadors were keynote speakers at the seminar.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya and UN-Women confirmed their call during this event to conduct an investigation into the disappearance of HoR member Siham Sergiwa.

The UN mission said: “Stability, reconciliation and peacebuilding in Libya cannot be achieved in the absence of a woman’s sense of safety. Intimidation and violence against women must end Impunity ”.
