IRINI Operation’s Chief says achieved progress in anti-arms smuggling to Libya

The commander of the operations of the “IRINI” mission that aims to monitor the arms embargo on Libya, Admiral Fabio Agostini, confirmed that significant progress had been made in combating the smuggling of weapons and oil to and from Libya during the three months of the operations’ work.

In a statement to the Greek newspaper “Kaba”, Agostini explained that the operation includes, in addition to ships in the central Mediterranean region, European air and satellites.

Fabio Agostini confirmed that the mission works strictly and within the resolutions of the Security Council, the United Nations and the European Union, according to what was reported by the Libyan news agency- Tripoli.

Agostini noted: “With regard to concerns of some countries about whether the mission can limit the influx of migrants, the mission submits monthly reports to the European Council proving that no increase in the flow of migrants has been observed lately.
