International community welcomes Al-Sarraj, Saleh’s ceasefire announcement

An immediate ceasefire and a cessation of all combat operations in all of Libya. This declaration made by the political parties in Libya, Speaker of House of Representatives Aqilah Saleh and Head of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, was widely welcomed by the international community, as reactions to these two decisions continued, in a rapid and continuous manner.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya, (UNSMIL) said, via the acting Head Stephanie Williams, was among the first to welcome the consensus, which she described as important and aimed at stopping hostilities, in which the two sides expressed courageous decisions calling for the urgent implementation of ending the embargo on the production and export of oil based on what was stated in the two statements.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed the two statements and considered them an important step on the road to achieving a political settlement and the aspirations of the Libyan people to restore stability and prosperity as well as to preserve their capabilities.

The League of Arab States welcomed the two statements and expressed its hope that this step would lead to a speedy end to the negotiations of the 5+5 Military Commission, a permanent ceasefire agreement and an end to foreign military interventions, the departure of mercenaries and all foreign forces from Libyan territory, and the threat posed by groups and militias in the country.

Washington has also hastened to welcome this step, considering it an important step for all Libyans.

Russia welcomed the ceasefire and so did Canada, which called on all parties to the conflict to resume the political track.

Italy described the development of the ceasefire as an important and courageous step towards solving the Libyan crisis.

Reactions also came from Britain, Germany, Jordan and Algeria, welcoming the ceasefire decision and the call to activate the political track.

Locally, the National Oil Corporation welcomed as well the statements of Al-Sarraj and Saleh, who supported the proposal to reproduce and export oil and freezing revenues in its account at the Libyan Foreign Bank.

While the responses are still continuing internationally and locally, everyone is now expecting to activate what was issued by the Speaker of Parliament and the Head of Presidential Council on the ground and open the way to a unified political path that ends the obstacles that hindered the establishment of a Libyan state.
