Acting UN envoy to Libya pledges to help formation of Fezzan municipalities council

The Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Stephanie Williams, met the mayor of the municipal council of Sebha Shawish Abd Al-Salam.

The UN mission in Libya said in a tweet on that the Sabha mayor briefed Stephanie on the situation in the city and the most prominent challenges facing the municipality.

The UNSMIL added that the mayor of Sebha informed the Acting Special Representative of the establishment of the Municipal Council of Fezzan, while on her part, Williams pledged to hold a meeting between the United Nations team and the mayors of Fezzan region to support the initiative.

Sabha witnessed the launch of the “revolution of the poor” protests, on the 15th of August, and the mayor said: “The movement witnessed unity and a single spirit that brought together all the people of the city, in a scene in which they demanded their most basic rights.”

The Mayor of Sabha called on the Government of National Accord (GNA) and Libyan Government to realize the seriousness of the situation and deal with the demands of young people by providing all the capabilities they need, stressing that the municipality has not received any money from the two governments for 5 months.
