EU attempts to convince NATO to join Operation IRINI off Libya’s coast

The German capital is witnessing intensive meetings with the participation of the Secretary-General of NATO, who arrived in Berlin, for a joint security mission for the members of the alliance, and it is expected that the Libyan file will be on the meeting table.

An informed European source, in conjunction with the meetings of NATO members in Berlin, and the arrival of the Secretary-General of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, to the German capital, expressed his hope to persuade NATO to cooperate with the Europeans to support the mission of IRINI in the Mediterranean, to monitor the implementation of the United Nations resolution banning the supply of arms to Libya.

In his statement, the informed source acknowledged that Turkey is an obstacle to this cooperation, and that the defense ministers of the member states will again persuade NATO to approve the cooperation between the Sea Guardian process, which was launched in 2016 for maritime security in the Mediterranean, and IRINI, especially in the field of information exchange.

According to the informed source, the attempt to convince the Secretary-General of NATO doesn’t guarantee positive results in terms of approval and acceptance, adding that the attempt will continue to confirm to the international alliance that IRINI is part of the regional work to resolve the conflict in Libya.

Stoltenberg is expected to hold meetings and a press conference, with Chancellor Angela Merkel, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in the European Union Josep Borrell, in addition to senior German officials, followed by an informal meeting of European Union defense ministers, in the German capital.
