Libya refuses to preside over the Arab League

Libya sent a letter of rejection for the presidency of the Arab League Council at its current session, saying it would not preside as scheduled this time.

According to a statement issued by the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of the Government of National Accord, Mohammad Al-Giblawi, the Libyan delegate to the Arab League, Saleh Al-Shammakhi, officially informed the General Secretariat of Libya’s rejection of presiding over the current session of the Arab League Council, indicating that Libya is looking forward to the presidency of the League Council in better conditions and maintains its right to the presidency according to the rules of procedure and the applicable order.

The selection of Libya to preside over the current (154) session of the Arab League comes according to the text of Article VI of the rules of procedure of the League Council, which grants the presidency according to the alphabetical order of the names of countries, as Article VI states, that “if the president of the council at the ministerial level is unable to conduct the work of the presidency, the temporary presidency would be assigned to the delegate of the country that has the presidency of the next session.

It is noteworthy that Libya’s refusal is the sixth, after Palestine gave up its presidency, then Qatar, Comoros, Kuwait and Lebanon refused to step in.
