Cairo dialogue revives old disputes over Libya’s constitution draft

The constitution issue returns to occupy public opinion and elite debates after it was revived by the Cairo Dialogue, which included members of the House of Representatives and High Council of State as well as members of the Constitution Drafting Assembly to talk in general about the constitutional path and how to reach a permanent stage after nearly ten years of transitional stages and work with a constitutional declaration amended more than once.

The Cairo dialogue revived old disagreements about the draft formulated by the members of the founding body. These differences focus on language, science, anthem, the framework of rights and freedoms and the right to participate from all cultural components, some of whom resorted to boycotting the assembly because of their objections, which were not accepted at the time.

A group of the people interested in the draft constitution say that those who reject it seek to break the draft and the public by spreading poisons, spreading rumors and lies, and they also say that the draft was written in a modern and civilized manner, and the people have the right to seek an opinion on it because that is an inherent right for them as they are the ones who may accept it or reject it.

As for those who reject some of the draft texts, they spoke when they renewed their denial of their rejection of the draft in its entirety, stressing that their objection was caused by articles in the draft that dominate one region over another and one class over another, as well as some groups over others.

These developments indicate that the constitutional dialogue with all its depth, importance and controversy has returned to occupy public opinion amid the ongoing events that Libya is going through, and this is evidence that the constitution file has been and remains one of the most prominent and important files.
