UN Security Council gives “green light” to Libya’s ceasefire agreement

The UN Security Council issued a statement, welcoming the permanent ceasefire agreement in Libya signed between the parties to the conflict, in Geneva, on October 24, after various rounds of talks of the “5+5” military commission.

The UN Security Council statement called on the intervening parties in Libya to comply with the arms embargo and not to interfere in its internal affairs. It also called on the Libyan parties to “fully implement the agreement and abide by their commitments.”

On the main terms of the agreement that resulted in marathon rounds of military talks; the two military delegations agreed to remove the mercenaries from Libya within three months, and to establish a joint operations room for the police and a limited military force of regular soldiers.

The two military delegations also agreed to classify the armed groups in preparation for the integration of its personnel into state institutions, and the restructuring of the forces responsible for securing oil installations.

The delegations of the General Command and the “GNA” requested the UN mission to submit the signed ceasefire agreement to the Security Council for approval and ensure that everyone adheres to it.

It is expected that the joint committee between the two parties will meet during the coming weeks to start the work of the sub-committees responsible for unifying the military establishment and cooperating in the field of combating terrorism, integrating militants and following up the departure of mercenaries and security arrangements.
