Arbitrary detention of migrants in Libya is criticized by Human Rights Watch

Hanan Salah, the senior researcher in the Middle East and North Africa division and a specialist in Libya affairs at Human Rights Watch, criticized the arbitrary detention of migrants in Libya.

She said in a tweet on her official account: “The interception and return of migrants to Libya by the Libyan Coast Guard, supported by the European Union, continues”.

She also called on the European Union to suspend the support it provides to the Coast Guard until it ensures that migrants’ safety and rights are respected.

The specialist in Libya affairs in Human Rights Watch indicated that during arbitrary detention in Libya; migrants and asylum seekers are at risk of exploitation and violence.

Salah’s tweet came in response to the news that more than 370 migrants were intercepted and returned to Tripoli, after six boats carrying men, women and children tried to cross the Mediterranean.
