Turkey’s insistence on intervention in Libya puts it at clash with EU’s Operation IRINI

The Libyan political analyst, Bashir Al-Suwayi, considered that the Turkish cargo ship was intercepted by “IRINI” Operation to monitor the implementation of the arms embargo on Libya; evidence of a clear shift in European stances towards Turkish interference in Libya, which is still continuing despite the Geneva Agreement signed on October 23, and Security Council resolutions rejecting external interference in Libyan affairs.

Al-Suwayi said in an interview with Al-Arab that the regime of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is still betting on obstructing the paths of a military and political solution, as it gasps to strengthen its presence as an occupying power in Libya, relying on the influence of militias and the forces of political Islam, as well as the power of corrupt figures, which have come to see that their future in Libya depends on complete application of Ankara’s agenda.

In light of Erdogan’s regime’s insistence on continuing to smuggle weapons and ammunition, pushing more of its forces to the western region of Libya, in a way that hinders international efforts to achieve a political solution to the crisis that has raged for nine years; IRINI Operation incident with Turkey was done to monitor the implementation of the arms embargo on Libya.

The Head of the Defense Committee in the Libyan Parliament, Talal Al-Mihoub, denounced the silence of the United Nations mission toward Ankara’s continuous violation of the Geneva Agreement by continuing to supply armed formations with weapons and ammunition, which negatively affects the negotiating paths to resolve the crisis.

Acting Head of Mission Stephanie Williams said that the United Nations has the capacity to carry out the tasks entrusted to it with the support of the international community, stressing the need to fully respect the arms embargo.

She added that Operation IRINI adheres to Security Council resolutions, and what it has provided so far is a good job, which requires all countries that violate the arms embargo to be smart and abide by the arms embargo, especially since Libya is overwhelmed with weapons and does not need more.
