Williams welcomes efforts of House of Representatives, High Council of State to unify Libyan institutions

The Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephanie Williams, praised the great progress made by the participants in the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, in their determination to participate in the political process.

In a speech after the virtual meeting of the forum on voting on proposals for a unified executive authority selection mechanism, Williams explained that the participation was of 71 members of the forum in the process; one member was unable to participate due to health reasons, while three members abstained from voting.

The Special Representative indicated that 39 members voted in favor of proposal No. 2, 24 members voted in favor of proposal No. 3, and 8 members voted in favor of proposal No. 10.

The Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Stephanie Williams, held a virtual meeting to inform the participants of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum on the results of the voting process and to discuss the way forward.

Stephanie reiterated the commitment of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and its respect for the decision of the members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, which was taken during the recent direct meeting in Tunis, which stipulates that decisions must be taken on the basis of consensus.

The meeting witnessed a high level of constructive discussion among the forum members and a desire to move forward for the sake of the Libyan people.

The Acting Special Representative announced that a virtual session will be held in the coming days to discuss next steps, based on the very fruitful suggestions made by many of the Forum members in today’s session.

The Acting Special Representative commended the members of the Forum for continuing their commitment – as announced in the direct meeting of the Forum, which was held in Tunis – to conduct the national elections on December 24, 2021, on the necessity that the institutions responsible for creating the conditions necessary for the elections to be held responsible.

She stressed the importance of the work carried out by the High National Elections Commission in preparing for this entitlement and welcomed the government’s decision to allocate a budget to the Commission to start the preparations, and urged the disbursement of the funds pledged on the progress made in the economic track, in particular, the upcoming meeting of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Libya, which is expected to deal with the unification of the exchange rate.

The Acting Special Representative welcomed the continuing efforts made by the House of Representatives to meet and called on members of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State to work constructively with the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum to pave the way for the reunification of institutions as stipulated in the roadmap approved by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.
