Together We Build It: Libyan women hope peace talks work

A report by the American news agency “Voice of America” indicated that Libyan women played an influential role in the scene, while the political divisions in the country failed to establish a formal mechanism to allow women and youth to participate in decision-making.

The report highlighted the neglect of the role of Libyan women at a time when political parties are discussing a roadmap to end the war and the chaos of division and to hold elections.

Meanwhile, the organization “Together We Build It”, which works to promote peace and security in Libya, stated that Libyan women had expected that the peace talks led by the United Nations would take into account the balance and expand the representation of women among the negotiators.

The organization added that the political dialogue should reflect the demographics and society, while the report indicated that women in Libya have been subjected to violence since 2011, and despite the obstacles, women assume their positions in peacemaking efforts, through advocacy and participation in meetings related to the peace process.

In the same context, a report published by the Atlantic Council in 2019 warned that the conflict in Libya could create security vacuums that could be exploited by a group of militants. Consequently, the impact on women’s rights and security can be devastating.

According to the report; a group of Libyan activists said that the fair inclusion of different groups across society ensures that everyone’s concerns about a more democratic Libya are addressed, and the active participation of women helps the country take a major step in reshaping its institutions.
