218News unveils moves to “keep Presidential Council alive” with separate government

The length of the political dialogue sponsored by the UN mission resulted in a number of options being presented and the alternatives that are available, according to an informed source speaking to “218News”,  are current intentions from inside and outside the country to restore the Presidency Council to be a substitute for the current political dialogue, either by being made up of a president and two deputies, or keep it in its current form with the return of resigned representatives, or put replace them, provided that the current Head of the Presidency Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, remains in his position.

“218News” learned that these moves are led by a European state, amid no opposition from the rest of the European Union states, which say that this option must remain on the table after the so-far stagnant political dialogue.

The details indicated that the Presidency Council will be stripped of many powers, which will be transferred to the government and it will clearly be completely separate from the Presidency Council.

This information comes amid efforts by the UN Support Mission headed by the Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Stephanie Williams, whose mandate is nearing the end, after she stepped in for Ghassan Salame who resigned for health reasons.

The current moves coincide with the Security Council’s approval of the appointment of a Bulgarian special representative to Libya, Nickolay Mladenov. Meanwhile, the Europeans, through his appointment, return to the forefront of the scene in Libya, after Turkey and Russia advanced very clearly to a lesser extent.
