EU Operation IRINI’s Hamburg Vessel returns to Germany after UN arms embargo monitoring off Libya

The German frigate “Hamburg” participating in “Operation IRINI” returned to the “Wilhelm Meshafen” naval base after the end of the mission to monitor the arms embargo on Libya in the Mediterranean.

200 German soldiers on board the frigate were tasked with monitoring compliance with the UN arms embargo on Libya, and they searched suspicious ships heading to Libya since last August as part of the operation launched by the European Union.

The naval operation is led by the commander of the Greek navy in NATO, Brigadier General “Theodoros Micropoulos”, who assumed his duties as commander of the operation at the end of last October.

Micropolus leads the operation from October 19 until the end of the European operation’s mandate on March 31, 2021.
