Libyan Independence Day between “the past and present”

Today marks the 69th anniversary of the independence of Libya, which occurred on this day, December 24, 1951, after the Second World War that ended in 1945.

Libyans are recalling this memory, at a time when the country is torn apart by the weight of disputes among factions.

Western countries were weaving intrigues and taking measures on the future of Libya, which the Italian occupier had left lands after defeat in the war, while Britain and Italy agreed on the 10th of March 1949 on the “Bevin Sforza” project, which provides for the handover of Tripoli to the Italians again, and Cyrenaica for the British mandate, and Fezzan to the French.

The competent committee of the United Nations; agreed to the resolution, but it failed because it received only a small number of votes in favor; as a result of the negotiations and dialogues calling for the independence of Libya, which was led by a delegation of freedom fighters from Libya, one of the founding fathers.

On the 21st of the same year; the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution of the independence of Libya and declared independence on the 24th of December 1951, when the interim government took over the administration of the country and the constitution was ready for implementation.

With all the attempts made by the colonial circles to keep Libya divided and weak; Libyans were able to establish a unified state under the name of the United Kingdom of Libya, under the leadership of the late King, Mohammad Idris Al-Senussi.
