Conte stresses to US President-elect the need for dialogue in Libya

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said he discussed the situation in Libya with US President-elect Joe Biden, adding that Italy always prioritizes this issue in its foreign policy.

Conte made the comments during the traditional year-end press conference held in the capital, Rome, on Wednesday.

Conte added that he stressed to Biden the importance of the Mediterranean region and the Libyan file to the United States, noting that Italy seeks to create “a unified Libya that is independent of foreign interference.”

Conte added that the situation in Libya always remains at the top of the Italian foreign policy agenda, indicating that the political crisis in the country can only be settled through negotiations and diplomacy.

Conte said that Italy has not stopped paying attention to the Libyan file or pushing for the stability of the country, noting that “the problems are not solved through combat, as there is always room for dialogue and diplomacy.”
