Williams: We won’t back down from holding Libya elections on December 24

The Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Stephanie Williams, said that the countdown to the elections began on December 21 with clear timetables according to the roadmap adopted during the Tunis meetings.

Williams added at the meeting of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, on Wednesday via video call, that “the election date is on December 24 and the road to the elections is an achievement and a goal that we will not back down from.”

She emphasized that she still believes that this process will not go forward and will not be successful if the approach followed in these important deliberations is based on profit and loss calculations, explaining that “what Libya needs is not an equation for power-sharing, but an equation for taking responsibility in a participatory manner that leads towards elections.” .

“We cannot continue an open process indefinitely,” Williams added, saying “We have a clear goal, which is elections, and there is an urgent need to unify institutions. However, we are facing a delay in progress towards achieving an acceptable level of consensus on a mechanism for choosing the executive authority.”

The Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya indicated that the current situation needs to form an advisory committee consisting of 15 participants in the dialogue forum, to help reach a consensus on these contentious issues.
