Newspaper unveils covert mission to transport air defense missile from Libya

The British newspaper “The Times” reported that a Russian truck-mounted air defense missile system that was captured on a Libyan battlefield was safely transported to a US air base in Germany on a secret mission.

The newspaper pointed out that the Russian Pantsir S-1 air defense missile system was captured during battles in Zuwara, and orders were issued for the operation amid concerns that the missile battery, which could easily shoot down civilian aircraft, would fall into the hands of armed groups or weapons smugglers in Libya.

According to “The Times”, the operation included sending a team on board a US Air Force C-17 Globemaster cargo plane to Zuwara airport, west of Tripoli, last June, to take the battery and transport it to the “Ramstein” base in southwestern Germany.
