Terrifying UNICEF report warns of water shortage crisis in Libya

The United Nations Children’s Fund “UNICEF” revealed that more than 4 million people, including 1.5 million children, face an imminent shortage of water in Libya.

In a statement, UNICEF expressed its concern about the status of water and sanitation in Libya, and immediate solutions to this crisis must be sought.

The UN organization stated that the repeated attacks on the Manmade River systems caused about 190 wells to be out of work from the Al-Jafara, Al-Hasawna, Al-Sarir and Tazarbo systems, which pushes the vital sector to the decay of the network.

Regarding the General Company for Water and Sewerage, UNICEF indicated that it suffers from a deterioration in the water supply network, which causes the loss of large quantities of water that reaches up to 50%.

The UN organization’s statement included the desalination plants, about which it explained that it suffers from a lack of operational materials and chemicals needed to conduct maintenance, and UNICEF mentioned, as an example, about the out of service of the Gulf plant and its impact on more than 63 thousand people.

The UNICEF Special Representative for Libya, Abdelkader Moussa, called on decision-makers and officials in Libya, as well as international organizations, to give priority to the water and sanitation sector, to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in Libya.
