International welcome to selection of Libya’s unified executive authority

The UN Acting Envoy to Libya, Stephanie Williams, expressed her happiness with the welcome feedback from the selected dialogue members.

In a press conference marking the conclusion of the Political Dialogue Forum in Geneva, Williams explained that the new executive authority members who were selected Friday expressed their commitment to the road map that was approved, and that national reconciliation will be among the priorities of the next government according to the roadmap.

The UN Acting Envoy added that February 19 is the deadline for the House of Representatives and the state to agree on the final distribution of sovereign positions, and that the LPDF will have a central role in verifying the implementation of the plans and programs of the new structures.

Williams described the achievements on the economic track as a positive.

The UN envoy confirmed that the exit of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya has become necessary, and the GNA will take over the management of the country’s affairs until the next government formation is approved after 21 days.

Williams indicated that Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar was represented in these talks and he expressed his support for them personally and for the existing political process.

The UN envoy called for careful monitoring of everyone trying to obstruct the new political tracks in Libya, and in her speech at a press conference marking the conclusion of the Political Dialogue Forum in Geneva, she welcomed international organizations to send observers to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire in Libya under the umbrella of the United Nations.

She explained that the 5+5 Joint Military Commission continues its work even after choosing the new political structures, and if the new structures fail to meet the electoral entitlements next December, the matter will be up to the members of the dialogue.

The UN envoy added that Libya suffers from a crisis of “lack of accountability”.

Meanwhile, the Presidency Council hailed the selection of a new executive authority, calling for the new government to assume responsibility, wishing it success.

The Presidency Council expressed its hope to provide adequate conditions for holding elections on time during the next stage.

HoR Speaker Aqila Saleh expressed his wishes for success to the new government and to get Libya out of its crisis to reach the presidential and parliamentary elections.

The member of the House of Representatives, Al-Shareef Al-Wafi, congratulated the victory for Mohammed Menfi as Chairman of the Presidency Council and Abdul Hamid Dabeibah as Prime Minister.

The HoR members meeting in Tripoli also welcomed the results of the vote on the Presidency Council and the new government.

International Welcome 

Egypt and Turkey welcomed the outcomes of the Political Dialogue Forum and the selection of a new Libyan government.

While Russia, in welcoming the results of the vote, called for it to become an important and pivotal step in overcoming the crisis, and explained: “We wish the new Libyan leadership success in achieving the difficult goals of the transitional phase.”

“We hope to organize a constitutional referendum and general elections on December 24 this year.” Russia added.

The German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, described the agreement on a new interim executive authority for all of Libya as another milestone towards peace.

Maas, in his country’s statement welcoming the outcomes of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, called on all Libyan factions and actors outside Libya to support the preparation for the elections, the implementation of the ceasefire and not stand in its way.

The German Foreign Minister affirmed his country’s support for the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
