Egypt says it will continue to support Libyans till they achieve peace

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry confirmed that his country made continuous efforts over the past period as part of its duty to embrace the Libyan political process and the ceasefire agreement.

Shoukry said during a press conference that recent events and the assignment of a new executive authority prompted Egypt to communicate with this authority to continue to play its role in sponsoring the peaceful path, through coordination with the new UN envoy.

He added: “Our aim in communicating with our Libyan brothers is for the current steps to be written success and for the Libyans to regain stability, while ensuring that none of the parties resort to armed action again.

He indicated that an Egyptian delegation, from the Foreign Ministry and the security services, had headed to Libya to discuss ways to restore the Egyptian presence in the capital, Tripoli, and the consular presence in Benghazi.

Shoukry stressed that Egypt will continue to take part in the Libyan affairs because it is a neighboring country as Cairo aims to achieve the interest of the Libyans themselves, saying Egypt will interact positively with the United Nations and the international community until Libya reaches the stage of stability and holds elections.

The Egyptian minister added: “The new authority is linked to holding the elections on time, and we have noted what happened after the Skhirat agreement in terms of not adhering to the time frame set for the government.”
