Ghassan Salame: There is high hope in Libya despite massive challenges

The former UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, described the political scene in Libya at the present time that it is witnessing clear signs of hope, unlike what other crises in the region are witnessing, such as Syria and Yemen.

Salame stressed in statements to Al-Hurra TV that other challenges facing Libya today are the presence of more than 20 million weapons and more than 20.000 foreign fighters, and this is all a cause for concern, but he made clear in the course of his speech that the Libyan situation today is better than it was years ago.

The former UN envoy to Libya expressed his joy at the presence of a youth movement telling the political class in Libya, “Be aware that you have signed a written pledge to hold the elections on time, and that we are observing them and we will not let you betray this era.”

Salame praised the outcomes of the three tracks emanating from the Berlin meeting, which reached the first Libyan progress and consensus since 2014, adding that the United Nations had succeeded in establishing an international understanding on Libya.

The former UN envoy to Libya said that the situation in Libya is much better than it was 6 months ago, and added that he had been in contact with the Libyan political class for 3 years and there are those who do not want to resort to elections, some of whom are in official positions.
