EU’s Operation IRINI commander to visit Tripoli, discuss coastguards’ training

The commander of the European Union’s Operation IRINI, Fabio Agostini, is expected to visit the capital, Tripoli, soon to discuss the possibility of resuming training of the Libyan Coast Guard personnel, according to a European source.

The source indicated that the training of the Libyan Coast Guard personnel falls within the tasks assigned to Operation IRINI, which is operating in the Mediterranean Sea.

The source indicated that the commander of Operation Irene will discuss with the government retraining, which was suspended a year ago.

The European Union decided to extend IRINI’s  mission for an additional two years, as the crews of this operation are working to implement the arms embargo on Libya, monitor violations of the United Nations resolution, and inspect suspicious ships.
