Libya at Non-Aligned Movement summit: We won’t let our sovereignty slip away

Libya demanded the transfer of the results of the summit meetings of the Non-Aligned Movement, held recently in the Azeri capital Baku, and before it in the Venezuelan capital Caracas; to a practical reality that achieves the movement’s core objectives, especially ensuring fair representation for all people, in addition to promoting principles of respect for human rights, consolidating international security, and disarmament.

In a speech delivered by Omar Katti, Undersecretary for International Cooperation and Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the mid-term ministerial meeting of foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement countries, hosted by Baku via video communication technology, Libya urged to consider environmental issues and the risks to our planet, due to non-compliance with signed treaties to preserve the environment.

He stressed the need to consolidate the rules of a global economic and financial system, the basis of which is justice in distribution and taking into account the interests of countries and peoples, especially in developing countries.

He said: The Non-Aligned Movement, which represents nearly two-thirds of the member states of the United Nations, and participates in four out of five of the United Nations peacekeeping forces; It represents a powerful and effective conglomerate in today’s world.

Katti stressed the need for it to have a vital role in responding to today’s global challenges, which will shape the future of the Movement’s countries.

He stressed Libya’s commitment to the noble values ​​of the movement and the protection of the values ​​contained in the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and working to strengthen dialogue mechanisms to solve problems, through cooperation and coordination of efforts between countries to confront global challenges such as poverty, hunger, displacement and armed violence.

He pointed to the need for solidarity between the countries of the movement, to achieve peace and unity, to address the devastating impact of terrorism, social and economic deprivation, religious fundamentalism and cultural conflicts, and to coordinate to confront the emergency crises facing the world such as the “Corona epidemic.”

Katti added: The very serious economic, financial, social, security and humanitarian crises that many countries of the Non-Aligned Movement suffer from require the concerted efforts of the international community, to help confront these situations, to overcome these crises, and to continue working in efforts to achieve development and strive to reach the desired goals of sustainable development 2030.

“The worsening security situation, the increase in social and humanitarian burdens, leads to a threat to security and destabilization in many regions of the continents of Africa and Latin America, which requires intensifying national, regional and international efforts, and strengthening cooperation and coordination mechanisms within the framework of the Non-Aligned Movement, to address these situations and challenges, including combating organized crime, human trafficking, drug smuggling and trafficking, and illegal immigration.

He called the Member States of the Movement together; to unite to fight it and put an urgent end to it, noting that engaging in a serious dialogue between nations and peoples will contribute to overcoming many negative phenomena that offend a particular religion and cause hatred and conflict among peoples.

On the Palestinian issue; “Katti” stressed that persistence in racist policies, and failure to return the rights to their owners represented in the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, will lead the entire region to a bitter conflict.

He called on the UN Security Council to assume its responsibilities to protect the Palestinian people, and to work to implement its resolutions related to the Palestinian cause.

He commended the position of the Non-Aligned Movement countries during their various meetings, for giving the Palestinian cause great importance and their support for the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination, to return to their homes, and to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

At the conclusion of his speech, the Undersecretary for International Cooperation and Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed Libya’s commitment to the lofty principles on which the Non-Aligned Movement is based, and stated that it would not accept, under any circumstances, a waiver of its sovereignty, and that it would not be subject to any external dictates, and that Libya, as a member state of the movement, will work with Member States, at a steady pace; towards realizing the aspirations of the peoples of the movement in peace, security, development and social justice.
