Al-Sayeh: Electoral Commission ready but politicians’ disputes are posing hindrances

The Head of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh, said that the HNEC is waiting for the reception of electoral legislation and laws to complete the rest of the necessary sstags to finalize the “December 24” elections.

Al-Sayeh explained in an interview with the American Al-Hurra TV channel: “The current difficulty lies in our failure to receive the legislation related to elections, and this is a contentious matter among the political parties that are in conflict with the political path for the next stage, which constitutes an obstacle to the implementation of our tasks represented in holding elections.”

The Head of the HNEC indicated that they had entered into the process of actually implementing elections by updating the voter reregistration since last April, in addition to other processes that are not directly related to the electoral law.

Al-Sayeh continued: “The decision to hold elections was issued and approved by all parties, in the first dialogue sessions related to the road map that was presented to the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, and I do not think that there will be a dispute over the date of elections.”

He also confirmed that they had set expectations for the registration of half a million voters during the last period, indicating that this number had been registered, and the HNEC record became nearly 2 million and 300.000 male and female voters, so they have a credible voter registration that can be relied upon in the upcoming elections.

Speaking about the registration of Libyan voters abroad, Al-Sayeh said that the voter registration system abroad has begun to attract voters, and the HNEC is still studying decisions related to polling stations outside Libya.
