US, Tunisia express support for holding elections in Libya

The Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs assured Derek Chollet, the US State Department’s advisor, that Tunisia is keen on a comprehensive political settlement in Libya, by paving the way for the upcoming elections.

During a meeting held in the capital, Tunis, on Tuesday, the two sides stressed the need to support Libya; to ensure stability and security, through the success of the political track, especially the achievement of electoral benefits and the establishment of permanent institutions.

The Tunisian Foreign Ministry stated, in a statement, that the officials exchanged views on a number of regional issues, and the intensive preparations for the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, to be held in New York from September 21 to 27.

For his part, the US official praised the consensual and constructive role that Tunisia played during its non-permanent membership in the Security Council, expressing his country’s support to continue preserving Tony’s democratic gains, the foundations of the rule of law and the values ​​of modernity, in addition to addressing various challenges and continuing coordination and consultation between Washington and Tunisia.
