Guterres welcomes plan to withdraw foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, welcomed the agreement of the “5 + 5” Joint Military Commission in Geneva, on a comprehensive plan of action for the gradual and balanced process of the withdrawal of mercenaries, foreign fighters and foreign forces from Libya.

In a statement attributed to his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, Guterres described: The action plan as “the cornerstone of the implementation of the October 2020 ceasefire agreement.”

The Secretary-General of the United Nations commended the prevailing unity of purpose within the Joint Military Commission, calling on all actors in Libya and international parties to work towards implementing the gradual withdrawal of foreign fighters and mercenaries.

Guterres expressed his confidence that the deployment of an initial team of United Nations ceasefire monitors would contribute to creating the conditions for the successful implementation of the action plan, reiterating, at the conclusion of his statement, the firm commitment of the United Nations to support the Libyan people.
