UN calls for holding accountable the people involved in killing immigrants in Tripoli

Spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Marta Hurtado, called for an immediate, thorough and independent investigation into allegations of unnecessary and disproportionate use of force against migrants, and for those involved in recent incidents to be held accountable.

Hurtado called on the authorities in Libya to release all arbitrarily detained migrants and asylum seekers, stop raids on their detention centers, stop evacuating them, and stop criminalizing them.

The spokeswoman expressed concern about the continued suffering of migrants and asylum seekers in Libya, who suffer countless daily violations and abuses at the hands of governmental and non-governmental actors, as she described it.

The statement pointed to the increase in harsh security raids against migrant sites, which caused the death and injury of a number of them, calling on the government to take action to house migrants and asylum seekers in appropriate and safe conditions, while ensuring access to adequate health care.
