UN comments on Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi’s presidential candidacy in Libya

Commenting on Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi’s candidacy for the presidential elections; the United Nations confirmed that the High National Commission will resolve issues related to approving the candidacy of all persons for the elections.

The Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Farhan Haq, added in a press conference that the UN supports the Libyan authorities in their preparations for the parliamentary and presidential elections, pointing to the presence of the UN mission on the ground and its dealing with all Libyan parties concerned to help achieve consensus to ensure the achievement of a comprehensive and meaningful vote, which should be based on credibility, and held on time.

Haq stressed that “the powers of the Electoral Commission are to accept the nomination documents and to determine the criteria for the candidates’ response to the legal framework.”

It is noteworthy that the Electoral Commission announced, on its official Facebook page, its rejection of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s candidacy for the presidency, and soon deleted the post, and indicated that its page had been hacked.
