Will election campaigns take heed of the ocean and environment?

The twenty-first episode of Al-Ad Al-Aksi (The Countdown) program discussed the issue of preserving the environment and its absence from political discourse and electoral propaganda, in addition to the lack of awareness about climate change in the surrounding environment, with the guests of the episode, the environmental activist and head of the organization from earth to sea Fayez Al-Sati, and a member of the Tunisian Agency to protect the ocean, Mohammed Tawfiq Al-Najjar, and environmental activist, Nisa Bakri.

Fayez Al-Sati stressed that pollution of the sea and overfishing are turning the Libyan sea into a desert without life, saying the role of environmental education is needed to ensure children’s awareness of the environment in the future.

Al-Sati called on future members of parliament to put forward the idea of Libya signing international environmental agreements. He also stressed the role of municipalities in taking care of the environmental file, by changing the infrastructure of dilapidated water networks, which contribute to environmental pollution in their current situation.

Al-Najjar said that there is a great environmental decline in Libya and the countries of the region, due to the lack of policies to protect the environment, pointing to the lack of environmental education in Libya, and noting that there is no justification for not including it in educational curricula.

Al-Najjar added that the problem of climate change is a global problem, and the Arab countries are concerned with it like other countries, stressing that the war today is over water, and whoever has water has the power, saying that the pollution of water resources means the deterioration of the country.

In turn, the environmental activist, Nisa Bakri, said that the environmental situation is very dangerous in Libya, in light of the lack of climate and environmental education in Libyan education, despite the availability of ready-made environmental curricula, but the negligence of the Minister of Environment and government officials prevented their application and adoption.

Bakri confirmed the launch of an environmental awareness campaign, but the government and local reactions were very negative in terms of interaction, noting that many Libyans deal with the environmental problem as a problem that belongs only to the West.
