Russia: Continuation of UNSMIL’s work in Libya without a head of mission weakens mediation efforts

The Russian Foreign Ministry considered that the continuation of the work of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya without a Head agreed upon by the members of the Security Council weakens the mediation capabilities and the authority as well as effectiveness of the United Nations efforts.

A statement issued by the Foreign Ministry indicated that Moscow is determined to continue the search for mutually acceptable solutions to the remaining issues for the leadership of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, in order to ensure its work in accordance with the mandate stipulated in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

It added that it had expected the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to nominate a suitable candidate to head the mission as soon as possible, stressing the role of the United Nations, especially the mission, in pushing for a comprehensive peaceful solution to the crisis in Libya.

Moscow reiterated the need for a peaceful solution to the crisis in Libya, stressing that the premise of progress through long-term political organization can only be achieved if it is guaranteed by its comprehensive nature, through the participation of all influential forces in Libya.

It is worth noting that the Security Council voted on Monday, unanimously, to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, which expired on the 31st of last January, for a period of 3 months until the 30th of April.
