UN says no replacement to former envoy to Libya has been suggested so far as Williams plays “advisory role only”

The Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Farhan Haq, said that no specific alternative name was presented at the United Nations for the former UN envoy to Libya, Jan Kubis, who resigned two months ago, noting that the most important task now is to achieve elections in Libya.

Hr added, in a press conference held Tuesday, that Stephanie Williams, the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Libya, continues her work towards achieving the goal of the elections, and any new developments on the matter will be announced as soon as it occurs.

The spokesman confirmed that Williams does not play the role of the head of the UN mission or lead it, but rather she is doing advisory work to direct the international movement in Libya.

It is noteworthy that the Security Council decided to extend the mandate of the UN mission in Libya for a period of three months from January 31 amid reports of an American-Russian dispute over the name of the new envoy who will lead the mission.
